A boutique hotel in Bloomsbury is marking Valentine’s Day with a literary-themed initiative designed to encourage guests to engage with books in an unexpected way. The Academy, part of YTL Hotels, is offering a “Blind Date with a Book” experience that draws on the area’s long-standing association with writers and intellectual life.
The initiative invites guests to select a wrapped book from the hotel’s library without knowing its title or author in advance. Instead, each book is accompanied by a small number of descriptive clue words intended to hint at its themes or genre. The concept is aimed at encouraging readers to step outside their usual preferences, either by sharing the experience with a partner or by taking part individually.

The Academy is located in a terrace of five restored Georgian townhouses close to Russell Square. The hotel has positioned itself around Bloomsbury’s literary heritage, particularly that of the Bloomsbury Set, the early 20th-century group of writers, artists and thinkers that included Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and John Maynard Keynes. Design elements throughout the property reference this history, with book-lined spaces and interiors intended to evoke a private townhouse rather than a conventional hotel.
In addition to guest rooms, the hotel features a central courtyard that provides a quieter outdoor space away from the surrounding streets. Food and drink offerings include Mr Ma’s Afternoon Tea, a house speciality that blends traditional afternoon tea with East Asian influences, reflecting the hotel’s broader approach to combining classic and contemporary elements.
The Valentine’s Day offering forms part of the hotel’s wider seasonal programming rather than a separate package, with the book selection available to guests staying over the period. Room rates at The Academy start from £299 per night, depending on room category and availability.
The initiative reflects a broader trend among London hotels to create experiences linked to their local cultural context, particularly during key dates in the calendar. Further details and booking information are available via the hotel’s website at theacademyhotel.co.uk.
