At Bowes-Lyon we are fully awaited that re-entering the dating world, after divorce, bereavement or after a chosen hiatus, can seem a daunting challenge. Many people hold themselves back from doing so, for fear of the unknown, but it is a proven fact that love can be found at any age and at any time. Everyone deserves to share their life with someone. We offer a few points of advice to help you start your journey into dating:
How do I know when I’m ready?
Many people lead perfectly happy, independent lives, with varying hobbies and interests, but there may be a degree of closeness and companionship that isn’t being met by friends and family. Sharing life experiences, such as travel and social events, or even the simplest things, such as breakfast on a Sunday morning, can be greatly enhanced with a partner or companion.
Overcoming Obstacles
People are great at thinking of excuses and reasons to talk themselves out of uncomfortable situations. The key to moving forward, in any life scenario, is to address these obstacles. If you are letting go of a past relationship then take your time but ensure you are moving forwards and not staying stuck. Perhaps you are concerned about your children’s reaction to dating – communicate and talk to them, and do not be embarrassed about wanting to embark on new chapter in your life. If you don’t know where to start meeting people, make a list of options and try them all; join a dating app, look for clubs/singles groups in your area or, for a personalised experience, reach out to a matchmaking agency for options to help you on your journey.
Things haven’t changed that much
Whilst dating apps are more modern developments, when it comes to traditional dating, not much has changed. Don’t be scared by new dating terms and concepts, the story of romance remains the same as it always has. It is not out of anyone’s reach, whatever their age or situation.
Don’t rush
If you are dating later in life, you may feel that you have no time to lose, but it is best to take your time than rush things. Dating will be much more enjoyable if you enjoy the journey, rather than setting deadlines and goals. At Bowes-Lyon we advise to start the process by speaking to a number of people, testing the waters with conversations and, when it comes to meeting people, keep things light and easy. Meet for a drink, then maybe a lunch for date two, and then a dinner after that. The pleasure of dating is enjoying getting to know someone over time and having that excited anticipation of getting to see them again.
Wherever you are in your life it’s never too late for another chance at love and companionship. If you need some guidance in your dating journey, then the friendly team at Bowes-Lyon Partnership would be happy to chat to you.
