The Health and Wellbeing Charitable Golf Trust (HWCGT) has reached a major fundraising milestone, raising £500,000 in support of Woking & Sam Beare Hospice. The announcement was made during a charity golf day at New Zealand Golf Club, marking seven years of golf-based fundraising efforts.
The HWCGT, formerly known as a local golf society founded in 2016, has organised numerous events across the South East, including collaborations with Sky Sports Golf commentator Richard Boxall. All proceeds have been donated to support the hospice’s work in providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care.
According to HWCGT, the funds raised equate to more than 5,600 community nurse specialist visits to patients. The hospice’s services extend beyond clinical care, offering support from counsellors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and complementary therapists such as massage and aromatherapy.
Julian Wakeling, founder and trustee of the HWCGT, credited the fundraising success to the collective efforts of players, organisers, and golf clubs. “This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved and shows how golf can unite communities in support of a vital local cause,” he said. “We are particularly grateful to the clubs who have hosted events over the years, including Woking, Worplesdon, West Hill, Swinley Forest, The Berkshire, Hindhead, Hankley Common, and New Zealand Golf Clubs.”
The Trust has announced two further fundraising golf days for later this year. The first will take place on 23 September at Hankley Common Golf Club, followed by another event on 6 November at St George’s Hill Golf Club.
Individuals interested in taking part, donating auction items, sponsoring future events, or hosting a charity golf day are encouraged to contact Julian Wakeling at 07595 916444 or julianwakeling@aol.com.
