For the discerning traveller who believes every corner of London has been uncovered, it’s time to reconsider. Even after years in the capital, I found myself delightfully surprised when invited for a short stay with Zetter Hotels, promising a journey beyond the obvious, into neighbourhoods where history whispers and charm abound.
Clerkenwell: A hideaway in a treasure trove location
We began in Clerkenwell, at The Zetter Clerkenwell, hidden away on St John’s Square—a Georgian gem seamlessly blending period grandeur with contemporary luxury. The hotel’s 13 uniquely styled rooms and apartment suite evoke a sense of personal sanctuary: think four-poster beds, walk-in showers, antique bureaus with artisan coffee, and freshly baked shortbread delivered to your door. Downstairs, the Parlour’s fireside armchairs, and vintage touches invite lingering with a cocktail and innovative small plates—fish finger sandwiches with chef’s mayo and salt-baked beetroot proved irresistible. This was a perfect friends’ catch-up meeting venue and a real retreat from London’s bustle.

Clerkenwell itself is a treasure trove for cultural explorers. A guided walking tour revealed layers of history, from medieval springs and monastic roots to centuries of artisans and radicals. The area’s architectural patchwork—medieval relics, Georgian terraces, repurposed warehouses, and the striking Barbican—tells the ever-evolving tale of London’s ingenuity. Dinner at The Gazette, just across the square, offered refined French classics, before a digestif back at The Zetter, mingling with locals who have adopted the Parlour as their clandestine club lounge and other hotel guests returning from nearby Sadlers Wells Theatre.
Marylebone: Discreet whimsical elegance moments from the buzz
A swift cab ride carried us to the Zetter Marylebone, where two adjoining Georgian townhouses offer a similarly discreet, club-like atmosphere on Seymour Street, just steps from Marble Arch and Hyde Parks. Here, 24 individually decorated rooms marry British elegance with whimsical touches and antique art. The location is perfect for shopping sprees from Marble Arch to Bond Street, and gourmet discoveries abound—from artisanal bakeries to Michelin-starred dining.
A local highlight was the new Moco Museum at Marble Arch, a short stroll away, showcasing contemporary icons from Warhol to Banksy alongside immersive art installations. Retreating to the Zetter’s Parlour afterwards for a fireside Afternoon Tea—complete with savoury delicacies, scones, and patisserie—proved the ideal way to unwind.
