The Fox and Hounds pub really is a hidden gem, situated in the pretty village of Englefield Green, next to Guards Polo Club. It’s what I would call ‘a destination pub’ and in my opinion definitely worth making the journey for.
I can vouch that there can be few better sights after you’ve been on a strenuous dog walk in Windsor’s wonderful Great Park than entering the warm, inviting atmosphere of a pub such as this. Combine that with friendly, attentive staff and you can understand why the regulars (from dog walkers, horse riders, polo players, even the odd royal or local celebrity) keep coming back. And why wouldn’t they? It offers cosy dining areas that are perfect for those chilly winter days combined with a relaxing atmosphere where you can chat uninterrupted whilst enjoying some really good-quality comfort food.
Apparently the pièce de résistance is the pub’s Sunday lunch – beef sirloin, lamb shoulder, half chicken and nut roast which recently won an award amongst over 200 establishments as ‘the best Sunday roast’.
When we visited there was a hearty beef and ale pie on the week’s menu which I contemplated, but after a bit of thought, I went for the roasted chicken, parmesan mash, green beans and mushroom jus. It was everything I imagined it might be and more. I would have looked properly at the dessert menu but didn’t need to…sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream was the only thing I needed to see and believe me, it was worth every delicious mouthful.
There’s an enclosed heated outside paved seating area too and The Fox and Hounds is open seven days a week from 9am.
The Fox and Hounds is on Bishopsgate Road, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey TW20 0XU
