Emma Gibbons, the British artist who shot to fame earlier this year as Barbiemania swept the globe is set to unveil new Barbie themed pieces available exclusively from The Art Agency at Affordable Art Fair, 19-22 October. Margot Robbie purchased Gibbons’ ‘Bad Barbie’ (pictured above) from The Art Agency in March 2022.
Emma Gibbons said of her new Barbie themed pieces, “Selling ‘Bad Barbie’ to Margot Robbie last year was a pinch me moment and spurred me on to create more Barbie themed pieces. They are a total joy to create as I can’t get enough of working with pink glitter resin! This new piece is a completely unique take on Margot’s ‘Bad Barbie’. I’ve taken elements of the original and re-worked them with my signature handmade resin & glitter pills in an entirely new colourway, with one or two surprise features thrown into the mix!”
Emma shares her similarities with Barbie, “I feel that Barbie and I share an aesthetic. She basically embodies everything I am trying to achieve in my work. She’s playful. She’s accessible. She’s pink. She’s glittery. She likes designer labels. She likes a catchphrase! I basically think we share the same DNA.”
Alison Ramsay, Co-owner The Art Agency said, “Emma’s pieces are a joyful nod to the cultural phenomenon of Barbiemania that is still taking the world by storm. Her pieces are colourful, cheeky and packed with a feel-good factor. We’ve enjoyed playing a part in her meteoric success and who knows, maybe Margot will be back to snap up the sequel to ‘Bad Barbie’.”
On the back of Margot’s purchase Emma Gibbons was asked to do an entirely Barbie-themed show at the 5* ME Hotel on the Strand, which ran for 3 months over the summer 2023, spanning the Barbie Movie film release which premiered at Leicester Square, a stones’ throw away from the hotel. She was also invited to the movie Premiere! All of which happened because of Margot’s spontaneous Affordable Art Fair purchase from The Art Agency.
