Companies suitable for solemn pageantry
The occasion will of course be solemn, but surely no other nation quite does such events with such elegant style. Back in Spring 2020 in our ‘Embracing brand UK’ article we looked at some of the ancient quintessentially British brands that are rich with heritage. Companies suitable for solemn pageantry, for example:
Henry Poole & Co. Founded: 1806, London (pictured above).
In 1806, Shropshire lad James Poole began his professional life in London as a linen draper. By the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, James Poole had become London’s preeminent tailor. In 1846 James’s charismatic son, Henry, inherited the business and such was his flair for social mobility that he went on to serve Queen Victoria – receiving his first royal warrant in 1858. It was to King Edward VII that Henry Poole owed his reputation as a leader of fashion, as his Mayfair premises became a social hub for the then Prince of Wales.

Johnsons of Elgin, founded 1797 – manufacturers of estate tweed to The Price of Wales (now King Charles III)

Edward Green shoes, Founded: 1890, Northampton
Starting in the industry as a 12-yearold apprentice, Edward was driven by an ambition to make a better class of shoe. His name became associated with the finest English Goodyear
welted footwear, gracing icons from Ernest Hemingway to Edward, the Duke of Windsor. The footwear is stocked at 75 Jermyn Street SW1.
Launer, Founded: 1940, London
Handbags that were consistently popular with Her Majesty the Queen, Launer was created by Sam Launer who had fled Czechoslovakia with his wife and two sons. The company originally worked out of a workshop in Soho, has been a royal warrant holder since 1968. Manufacturing is now undertaken in Walsall and Launer products are stocked in stores such as Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols and Fenwick.
These historic companies, plus many others including Rolls-Royce Motor Cars right through to Barbour were featured in the article which appeared in our Spring 2020 edition.
