Even in normal circumstances around 1 in 10 of us will suffer from depression at some point, so says solution-focused clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist Amanda Thoden van Velzen.

Anyone can become depressed; even successful and famous people will battle with this condition. According to the World Health Organization, depression is the most common form of mental disorder in the UK.

What is depression?

Sadness, grief and feeling low are normal human emotions. We all have those feelings from time to time, but they usually go away within a short period of time. Major depression is something more; it involves a loss of interest in things that used to bring pleasure and a sense of hopelessness.

Those feelings are usually accompanied by other emotional and physical symptoms, such as a difficulty in sleeping or being constantly exhausted, having little or no energy, lack of appetite, seeing everything in the worst possible light, difficulty in concentrating, feeling very irritable, lack of confidence and feelings of anxiety and being restless. Often there is no ‘why’; it can just sneak up, but it is frequently an indicator that something is missing and it is usually secondary to another problem.

How can solution-focused hypnotherapy help?

Depression is very treatable and hypnotherapy has a dramatically lower rate of relapse than by using anti-depressants alone. Together, we will look at the strengths and resources that you have used successfully in the past and help to find small ways of harnessing those again.

Depression is often caused because something is missing from our lives, and by looking at your fundamental and innate needs and working on ways to introduce these back into your life, we can create the way forward to making positive changes.

With regular hypnotherapy sessions, it also gives our minds the necessary time to relax and ‘reboot’; and when we feel calmer, we are able to make more rational, logical choices and feel back in control, enabling us to disperse that black cloud and thrive.
